FARPOint’s commitment to the environment
Farpoint is a friend of the planet. We are committed to an environmentally sustainable media production industry and reducing our carbon footprint. We strive to better understand and manage our impact on the planet, and to help others in our production family and the wider industry to implement initiatives to make the difference to our planet and community.
Like all media productions, Farpoint’s impact on the environment was frighteningly wide-ranged.
Our impacts.
We consumed lots of electricity to power and charge our equipment
Printed documents on paper for crew and staff
Travelled and moved ourselves and our production equipment from location to location
Worked with freelancers and vendors who travelled from outside of Brighton and Hove
Stored data in the cloud and used digital services to manage our projects
Relied on an army of suppliers who inevitably had their own carbon footprints (embodied carbon)
Leased offices and studios for filming that required heavy power consumption.
Farpoint works and connects with a number of businesses, organisations and people. It’s incumbent upon us to encourage and enlist their support in reducing our carbon footprint and impact on the environment and our community.
OUR Allies.
Here’s a list of allies we are enlisting in our initiatives to go zero carbon.
Directors and producers Farpoint collaborates and hires to manage projects
- Often deciding much of how productions are run, these key stakeholders now factor into pre-production how decision can impact our carbon footprint as standard procedure.
Crew members hired on productions
- Crew are trained at shoot inductions on how to limit impacts on environment when on location, recycle waste as a priority and to travel by renewable energy transport options.
Equipment suppliers and vendors
- We request our suppliers and vendors to not use plastics and non-renewable packaging in supplying us with gear, and to ship by least-carbon heavy means.
Caterers supplying food and drink
- We are very vegan friendly at Farpoint! Predominantly fair trade and vegan food suppliers are our priority when choosing caterers.
Production offices and storage that Farpoint leases
- Farpoint leases offices and storage. Such locations can reduce their footprint through LED lighting and renewable energy supplies.
Digital service providers
- Farpoint chooses digital services providers for our project management tools and software based on their commitments to zero carbon
OUR ACTIONS.
Our mission to be zero carbon requires means that we must commit to measures that make meaningful change. Here’s how.
Our mode of travel is now renewable, either the vast network of electric buses in Brighton and Hove, or electric taxis. To further reduce our travel footprint, we are committed to produces content far from our home base by hiring local companies and freelancers while we monitor only remotely (sad not to go to all those places but entirely necessary!)
Our base office and storage location is powered by LED lighting. No more tungsten. We also favour working without artificial light during the day where possible to reduce our energy consumption further. Our rented equipment lighting is now LED-only.
We use renewable energy to supply our leased locations and ask that our supplies and vendors consider it also. We use solar-powered battery chargers where possibly to further offset our footprint.
Our target is zero waste, whether from purchased or hired equipment, or catered food and drink. We work with suppliers who use biodegradable or recycled packaging.
Digital copies of agreements, scripts, concepts, meeting minutes, you name it—if it was printed we’ve moved it to digital.
We favour digital service providers that have an environmental policy in place that is committed to zero carbon (and zero knowledge for security!).
Most of Farpoint’s family is vegan or vegetarian, and we promote and hire caterers who can supply vegan food. We don’t preach vegan but we know all about beef, cacao and coffee’s carbon footprint!
Repair, repair, repair (then sell on). No lazy throwing away of equipment, it gets recycled through recycling organisations, donated to charity, or sold on to someone who can use it.
